When he saw what they were up against Lt. Murphy’s thoughts gelled in an instant to determine a direct plan of action. Time after time he maintained his composure as tank shells and bullets bounced off the tank destroyer and exploded all around him. When artillery asked how close the enemy was getting he famously told them to hold on a second and he would let them speak to one of them. An amazing marksman he saved himself by spying ones who were trying to approach so they could rush him dispatching them with the powerful machine gun which was wreaking havoc all over the battlefield against equipment and men as one individual held off hundreds and saved his “B” company, for over an hour. Finally, when the Germans saw that they were not able to knock him out, they began to falter. Shortly after Audie climbed down from the tank destroyer as he was walking away it exploded. Refusing to be evacuated because of his wounded leg, Lt. Murphy reorganized his men and routed the Germans. This was an easy consensus. If anyone ever deserved the congressional Medal of Honor, Audie did.
