In retrospect, the danger level should have been assessed as great. Eli was exhausted on several levels. In addition to being at the very top of the best spys on the planet, he ran a full time very successful import-export business. He spent endless hours compiling, condensing, translating and coding reports, readying them for their transfer back to headquarters. Often he would work until morning making microfilm copies. As part of his spy work he frequently had to entertain friends and valuable sources to maintain, consolidate, and improve his contacts. It was not infrequently that he would find himself working a 24 hour day. Exhaustion and the massive psychological strain over time had to debilitate you in many areas. Eli failed to sense or logically deduce the ominous implications of the unusual blackouts of electricity or the implementation of advance technology being used to try to track down the source of the mysterious transmissions emanating from the area. His apartment was broken into, he was caught, tortured and because of the embarrassment he would bring to the regime, he wasn’t released in a trade but was hung.
