Donnie knew all along from the time he put the gun on the table that he was going to have to give up a name. He was doing the unthinkable, he was trying to penetrate the mob, as an FBI agent no less! What made him think that this was even an assignment which could be done! Quietly, without any warning his life could be snuffed out by someone who happened upon his identity. A guy remembers his face from a trial, some mole in the government gives him up. It could happen at any moment. He would be none the wiser. He could be whacked at any time. And how would he do this impossible job? It would take countless hours of work, a lot of it dull and uneventful. A lot was going to be dependent upon chance. Chance meetings and connections. He’d have to give up his own personality and life and be willing to become the kind of person amenable to and comfortable with these hoods. He had to win them over, he had to be a “totally stand-up guy” in their eyes. They had to desire to be around him and give up all kinds of information. These super secret by instinct characters. They had to trust him and come to believe that they knew him.
“Getting pretty tired of your big mouth, Patsy said. “You seem to want to say a lot around here and we don’t know who you are. You could be a stoolie.” You don’t leave this place until you give us a name so we can check you out”. Patsy and his buddy Frankie had just gotten out of prison. When they showed up, coming back to the old gang, there was Donnie. Donnie brimmed up in anger: “Who are you.” He yelled back. “You could be a stoolie! I ‘ve been coming here for months and everybody’s satisfied, I don’t have to give you no name!” Jilly, the boss intervened and tried to cool things down. Don feigning tortuous deliberation before giving in as a favor to Jilly, gave the name of an informant in Miami where Don had told them he was from. This man had been set up for just this type of eventuality. Patsy went out to call and check with this guy and was gone for hours before returning with defeat and resignation on his face declared: “Your guy ok’d you. You’re good”. Everybody all around breathed a sigh of relief but Don. He had to save face now. He could not appear to give up a valuable contact easily. He edged over to Patsy and swung ferociously hitting him in the face and knocking him to the floor. He also rained a couple of blows on Frankie before Guido the toughest of them all, separated them. “You punks”, Donnie shouted, “you see me on the street, you better walk the other way!” Alright Guido said, that’s it, I don’t want to hear nothin’ else about Donnie not being O.K.”
